M2.Unit One, Lesson Six
In Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" the central idea of guilt begins to emerge in paragraph 16 and is developed throughout the conclusion of the story through the use of punctuation. Throughout the story of the narrator's murder of the old man and his "evil eye," Poe uses dashes and exclamation points to create suspense, to characterize the narrator, and to emphasize the narrator's tone. In paragraph 16, the narrator begins to feel guilt. This is first hinted at through the use of a dash to introduce the idea that "-- until, at length, I found the noise was not within my ears." The dash slows down the sentence, creating suspense for what the narrator is about to reveal: he is beginning to hear the beating of the old man's heart. This shows the narrator's guilt because it would be impossible to hear the old man's heart as he is dead and dismembered. Poe continues to emphasize the narrator's guilt through _________________ in paragraph 16 when the narrator says, "____________________________________." This use of __________________shows the narrator ____________________ because _______________________________________________________________________________.(Now transition into a third example of Poe's use of punctuation in paragraph 17.)
